Visit of World Bank country representative for Suriname to Paramaribo to meet with the government in transition

The country representative of the World Bank responsible for Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago paid a work visit to Suriname from 9 to June 10, 2010.

In addition to his visits to diplomatic and multilateral representatives, Mr. Giorgio Valentini also had intensive discussions with the upcoming President of Suriname and its political, economic, social and monetary experts in Paramaribo.

During these talks, that had an exploratory nature, an envisaged partnership with the World Bank was discussed for a new social and economic development of Suriname. This visit was essentially a continuation of several meetings, before the election took place, between Mr. Bouterse, his party experts and Mr. Valentini. The focus of the discussions was always on the need for good governance, transparency and democratic participation of the people of Suriname with regard to the implementation of the new government policy towards a more competitive economic model in which climate change and environment will be key elements.

Mr. Valentini has left on June 11 to his office in Georgetown, Guyana with the assurance that the established relationship between the new Surinamese government and the World Bank will be further developed into a close collaboration. The prime focus will be in particular to use the considerable knowledge and experience in working with governments and private sector and the large international network of the World Bank. This will be the fundamental basis for programs to be developed in the field of good governance, an effective and efficient government and a private sector which, together with an effective and service-oriented government, will give Suriname a unique possibility to grow to become a role model country and one of the most prosperous countries in the world.
